Final FCS Now Poll released; 'Nova No. 1

 

(FCS Now) – Villanova finished up its 2009 championship season with the No. 1 ranking in the final FCS Now Poll of the year.

Villanova finished 14-1 after edging Montana 23-21 to win the 2009 national championship for the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS, formerly Division 1-AA).  The Wildcats received all 75 first-place votes.

Montana's loss to Villanova marked the Grizzlies' only loss of the season.  Montana finishes the season ranked No. 2 in the final poll.

Appalachian State earned the No. 3 spot after losing a heart-breaker at Montana 24-17 in the semi-finals of the playoffs.  No. 4 William & Mary also bowed out in the semi-finals, losing 14-13 to eventual champion Villanova.

Richmond, the 2008 FCS national champion, finished 11-2 on the year and is ranked No. 5 in the final FCS Now Poll.

 

Southern Illinois, South Carolina State, New Hampshire, Elon, and Stephen F. Austin round up the top ten.

McNeese State found the No. 11 ranking, followed by Eastern Washington, South Dakota State, Jacksonville State, and Northern Iowa.

Prairie View A&M finished the year ranked No. 16 after a 9-1 campaign, capped off by a 30-24 win over Alabama A&M in the SWAC championship game.  Prairie View is followed in the rankings by Holy Cross, Weber State, Pennsylvania, and Colgate.

Texas State, Florida A&M, Liberty, Eastern Illinois, and Harvard finish out the top 25 of the final FCS Now Poll.

The FCS Now Poll ranks the top 25 Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) college football teams in a weekly FCS poll.  These FCS rankings are compiled and updated weekly throughout the FCS football season beginning with an FCS preseason poll.  Submissions are due on Sundays at 8:00 p.m. EST.  The final FCS poll is released following the FCS championship game.
